Software Update for the N95 version 11.0.026

well..considering the N95 has a SIRF STAR II chipset....the whole Slide-keypad-open-and-wait procedure is gonna be a part of life.. :(
Sorry Schmmuck, there are no official details from Nokia about the GPS chipset details. However, the N95 is running the ARM OMAP processor platform for Texas Instruments. And it is rumored to have on of the compatible A-GPS chipsets from Texas Instruments onboard. Being only slightly less sensitive than SIRF Star III. Besides, it still works with the slide closed. If the reception is not to shabby you can keep it in your pocket and it wil still work and give directions through my bluetooth headset ;-)

The biggest problem is getting a first lock is difficult sometimes. And having the slide open makes a difference. Quoting from SunSetGriffing in the nokia discussions area:

"The thing has to find at least 3 satellite signals (out of the 30 in orbit) which are hardly stronger than background noise, then download an "almanac" which describes the intended orbits of the sats. Once that is done, it downloads 30 seconds worth of data (called the "ephemeris" which tells the receiver any actual discrepancies in the sat's position from the intended position in the almanac. If the receiver finds the signal mid-way in this 30 second looped transmission, then it has to start again. If the already weak signal is lost, then it also has to start again. It then has to repeat this 30 second download at least 3 times (for a 2D fix) or 4 times (for a 3D fix)."

See his/her Message in Nokia Discussions.

Let me tell you, my Garmin with SIRF Star III can take on odd days a very long time to get a lock. Especially when I moving or surrounded by buildings causing reflections and interference. There seems little difference to me. I wished there would be AGPS support from the network.
