The iPhone a groundbreaking phone!

We'll here is the devils advocate answer:
If you think the N95 is so very cool, why state the obvious? Does the release of the iPhone make you feel insecure? Does it's sleek and ultracool design and interface, not make your N95 look old and dodgy? Is the iPhone not the state of the art wannahave gadget? The thing any kid wants even more than a StarTrek tricorder. Even if it is just all lights and not functional? Does it not look light years ahead of the rest of the world. Does it not make life simple more fun? Makes you a happy user?
Of course it does, of course it is. Apple took the average phone functionality and gift wrapped it into a shiny trinket with a innovative smart interface to make it accessible for the brainless masses that were lucky to get rich. It sells because it is the apple for Snowwhite or Eve. Everyone knows there is a catch, but they all still BITE! It's an old story and so is human nature. They sell fashion and ask only to vendorlock your soul... Would you not for a sexy Apple product?
The iPhone is innovative and first of it's class so we should cheer for it. It is an innovation in user-interface and technology used for user-interfaces. It has loads of interesting features which run (as far as I have seen on videos and reviews) smoothly animated. There are some neat tricks that could be learned from the iPhone. And I truly hope Nokia does. Because Sony and Ericsson gave use SonyEricsson, and behold: Sleek phones and great technology. Nokia and Apple? They are a match too, in a non-venderlock sense.
The iPhone is not a state of the art in a technological sense. The N95 tries that, hard, very hard and it shows at the cracks. The user-interface is not as integrated and holistic as it could be, as Apple usually does. And it's design?
The N95 has this solid business look, you can taste the finnish cultural design of it. As if was carved by a skilled finnish woodworker. And I like finnish woodwork, a lot, but not in plastic. An then it has this useless mediabutton slide thingy instead of a useful qwerty keyboard. Technological challenging for shure, but the media buttons are utterly useless and hideous difficult to operate. But in the end it all does not matter. As a multitool on the road it simply rocks. The only thing better in the civilized world is a creditcard and with that you can buy a N95!
I can do without all the sleek animations, it just wastes needed, desperately wanted, battery power. I switch all those flashy animation off on my N95. So I do thank Nokia for that option and not using a big, less bright, powerhungry touch screen. Though, one thing would be very cool. A wooden backcover for my N95 instead of the plum plastic shell! Talking about real style here! Sorry, Darla Mack, but pink does not cut it for a real man. I need something to gnaw on when the battery is drained.
And talking about power consumption check this Battery life of the iPhone versus N95 and other phones. Little difference between the lot if you ask me.
And no, the iPhone does not fit in your pocket, but then why should you put it there? You want to carry it in your hand and blind people with it.
Sorry if I got a bit carried away here...

Thanks, but ehh, pink? If you are into 16-year old girls perhaps. Nah, I like women at their best, 30+.
The N95 and the iPhone are different phones for different consumer demands. Which you could have read between the lines in the post. But come on?Problems syncing music, video, photos to and from the N95? No way. It is very easy. Transfering music? I can think of 7 ways to put on the N95, bluetooth, PnP, usb, Nokia Music Transfer, Windows Mediaplayer, cardreader. And yes there is support for OS-X too! Ever used LifeBlog on the N95? That's a real killerapplication. No, Nokia did that right, very right.
The 5MPixel of the N95? 3.2M or 4Pixels is enough. But 2.1MPixels? Falls just a bit short. And no flash or even an assist light? That's crappy for any phone! But still it is Apple's first, so give them time. They had MacOS before they saw the light and went OS-X (FreeBSD/Unix based).
Like you said, this is 1.0 for Apple. I think they have come out with a decent device that does music, and web browsing, and those two things stand up to anything else on the market. If you're looking for great camera photos, then look to the Nokia Nseries devices, or SonyEricsson devices.
It's all about what you want to do with your device.
For me, personally, the camera is the single biggest issue with the iPhone. I've been using nice camera phones for years and it would be tough to downgrade - since I take so many pictures with my phone.
7 different ways (without installing extra software) means I can connect to almost any system. 8 Forgot infrared ;-) But you can just plug your phone into your pc and have automagically music installed. No problem. That where the mediaplayer usb mode is for.
Talking camera's I would go for a N93i, because of the 3x optical zoom. That rocks if you can live with the size of the slab.
Ey Snoyt,
U happen to be a professional writer in yr daily life? Wow, the way u write that article... to say the least is that u got carried away a bit. haha. :))
Great reasoning though. Still agree with u. :))
And Shomer, I have absolutely no problem transfering music to my N95.
Toedeloe,
Don't forget, we gotta give Apple some credit here for helping to change perception (in the States) about how much a mobile device can cost. Before the iPhone, most would not consider spending more than $50 - $100 on a phone. When I bought my N80 over a year ago, my friends thought I was insane for dropping 5 hundo down on a phone. This may actually help out all the other manufactures as well ^_^
Hi Merlijn, sounds dutch your name. Ya know. No I am not a professional writer unless you talk about my proficiency in Java and C++ ;-). Nowadays coding seems to be a significant part of my work. Check the spelling errors in my posts if you need proof. But thanks for the compliment.
I guess am evolving beyond the science geek who finds it easier to talk to people in his head that actually conversie in life ;-)
My first was a HPLX 200 don't remember the price, but loved it. A bit to clunky though. Then 10 years ago a palm Vx for about 500 euro, without inflation correction on the price. Saved my life. I was always missing appointments at work. Yeah even with the boss. Got caughtup at my work and forgot the time. Mostly while in the lab.
Hoi Snoyt,
Yeah, Merlijn is sure a dutch name... I am from Belgium, but been living in Singapore for 7yrs... I noticed u are in the Netherlands. :)
Coding has never been my thing... I rather call myself an enthousiast... Over enthousiast sometimes...
My relation with nokia goes back to the good old days that nobody had a mobile and that i was dragging around a brick in my pants... Only cheated once on Nokia with an HP IPAQ. :)
2 out of our 3 iphones have faulty batteries
I'm no Nokia fan boy, actually hate them myself (alhough I own a N95), but there is too much hype surrounding this mediocre model due to a great team at Apple's advertising section.
iPhone = great looks, cool touch screen and HD, but what else is there?
I was pro-Nokia in the beginning. The had the best user-interface and phones. In the last 5 years SonyEricsson however had the edge with well thought user-oriented features and technology.
Nokia is back. But the stability of Symbian and the user-interface could do with an overhaul. Particular memory fragmentation seems to be an issue especially in corresponding with wifi/sip/maps. Still I am curious what will be their next step. I guess I am waiting for the Nokia NX-1701 ;-)
